Father’s Day is, personally, a difficult holiday for me to create items for. I get really picky about the items I make. It can’t be too cheesy, it has to be practical, and I DO NOT want to make a shirt that says “thanks for being the best dad.” Have you thought about that? Dad wears a shirt thanking himself?!
While thinking about what to make, I used a project idea I’ve used with vinyl and created a new key chain. As always, I created these designs in Silhouette Studio Business Edition. (The full video on the process is linked at the end of this post)
Set up the designs in Silhouette Studio
I created both designs to use the same font. I chose a stencil font to match the construction look of the materials. While the design for the hammer was easy, I had to modify a few things to create the key chains. I knew I wanted the key chains to have the words etched, the lines scored (a lighter look), and the key chain cut. Glowforge reads each line as a different command, so to create those three different cuts or engraves, you must change the line color.
Setting up the items to engrave
Since the key chains are cut on a flat piece of wood (I use this birch plywood from Amazon), you can just lay down the wood and go. However, the hammer will take some adjustments. Since it is wider than half an inch, we must remove the crumb tray to engrave the hammer. I used small cutting boards and a lego to prop up my hammer.
Engrave and Go!
After the initial setup, the rest of the process was simple. Here are the settings I used:
Hammer Engrave
- Speed – 1000
- Full Power
- Lines Per Inch – 340
- Focus Height – Auto
Key Chain Settings
- Engrave
- Speed – 400
- Precision Power – 50
- Lines Per Inch – 270
- Score
- Speed – 200
- Precision Power – 15
- Cut
- Speed – 200
- Full Power
I really enjoyed making these items and I’m excited to give them to friends and family this year. Click the link at the bottom of the post if you want the file! I also sell finished products on my sister site, Two Sassy Gals.
