Custom items can be such a precious gift to a family expecting a baby. These fleece blankets are so soft and, when engraved, look beautiful and minimalist. This tutorial shows you how to load the blankets into my Glowforge and what my ideal settings are for the blankets. (Full video linked at the end of the post)

No additional materials outside of Glowforge are needed, and I get my fleece blankets from All About Blanks! Use code LISA15 to save on your purchase!
Prepare your design
Type out your name or design in the design software of your choice. I use Silhouette Studio Business Edition. Make sure if you are working with a script font to weld the overlapping lines before sending the text to engrave.
Load your material into the glowforge
The blanket will be higher than the Glowforge clearance when using the crumb tray, so you will need to remove the tray for this project. Once the tray is out, fold the blanket to have your engrave area on top and the overall height of the folded blanket is 1.5 – 2 inches tall. I normally fold my blanket in half, then thirds.

Remember – the Glowforge engraves items up to two inches from the bottom of the machine. Your material must be within .5 inch from the laser, so your material must be 1.5-2 inches from the bottom. When using the crumb tray for smaller items, the tray automatically lifts it to the set area. When you are not using the crumb tray, your material must be 1.5 inches tall OR raised with something else to bring the top of it within that 1.5-2 inch threshold.
The blanket used here fits within the safe area of engraving for Glowforge. If I think the material may be too tall, I turn off my machine and bring the laser and laser arm over the material to see if it catches on anything. If it doesn’t, you’re good to go. Never do this while the machine is on.

prepare your job in glowforge
Once you have your blanket in your machine, click the three dots in the top right corner of your Glowforge software and select set focus. Click on the blanket to set the camera to focus on it.
Once the camera is focused, you can adjust your design placement to your desired area on the blanket. I always do my names in the bottom corner.
Set your engrave settings for the blanket. The settings I use are:
- Speed: 900
- Power: 10
- LPI: 225

Press print and watch the magic happen!
This has been SUCH a popular item for me, and it’s easy! There is no masking, weeding of vinyl or heat pressing. It’s also a great option for parents who want something more toned-down!
